Update from NELFT about the new EWMHS

08.03.16

About NELFT’s new Emotional wellbeing and mental health service (EWMHS)

From 1 November 2015, NELFT NHS Foundation Trust became the new provider of all Children’s and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) across Southend, Essex and Thurrock (taking over from incumbent providers SEPT, NEP, Provide and Essex CC and inheriting 232 new emotional wellbeing and mental health staff). CAMHS from that date is therefore now called Emotional wellbeing and mental health service (EWMHS) for children and young people.

NELFT is an experienced provider of mental health services for children and young people, already providing these services to children and young people in four London boroughs. It is also one of England’s largest NHS Foundation Trusts, providing community health services for children and young people with physical health needs in south west Essex and in the four London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge and Waltham Forest.

NELFT’s new EWMHS is for anybody aged between 0-18, living in the Southend, Essex and Thurrock areas and is free at the point of entry. The service is also for young people with special educational needs (SEN) up to the age of 25. Any young person experiencing emotional wellbeing or mental health problems, or any parent, guardian, professional or teacher of a child who is experiencing emotional wellbeing and mental health difficulties, may access the service. One of the biggest changes with this service is that from 1 November 2015, anybody can make a referral in to the service, whether for yourself, or on behalf of somebody else. Referrals can be made by phone, or by email. It is that easy.

Accessing the service

There is only one main phone number to remember: 0300 300 1600 to access the EWMHS during working hours 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. For out of hours and weekend Crisis Support Service, call the general NELFT switchboard on 0300 555 1201 to be put through to the Crisis Support Service.

You can also contact the service via email

For all general enquiries, please email: ewmhs@nelft.nhs.uk.

For all referral emails, please send them to: NELFT-EWMHS.referrals@nhs.net.

All general enquiries will be replied to within five working days and all referrals will be screened by a specialist EWMHS health professional within two working days.

Bedding down of the new service

As of 1 November 2015, we started operating the new number and have received very high call volumes as well as a high number of new referrals in to the service too. NELFT is doing its very upmost to respond to all calls and referrals as soon they are received but is aware that in some instances this is taking slightly longer than we might always endeavour. We would like to thank parents, carers and our service users for their patience and reassure all of MAZE’s website readers, that we have our service user’s care at the very heart of everything that we do, and are doing our very best to address any issues big or small as soon as they arise.

Listening to our service users and parents

We are a listening and innovative Trust so hearing first-hand what parents, carers and our service users are experiencing is the only way we can make on going changes and improvements to our service. We have just held a series of young people’s engagement events across Southend, Essex and Thurrock where we asked young people and parents who have used our EWMHS to date, for their feedback on the service so far. We will continue to hold these types of events regularly throughout the years to come, to give parents and service users direct opportunity to tell us their views so that we can consistently take them on board to make improvements to our service, and ultimately shape an EWMHS which truly works for its users.

We encourage all parents and carers of young people using the service to actively let us know your feedback, either through MAZE coffee morning drop in sessions in your area where the EWMHS practitioner is in attendance, or by emailing us directly at ewmhs@nelft.nhs.uk.
